 Boat Registration and Lettering FAQ

Do personal watercraft (PWC) need to be registered?

Requirements vary by state, but in most cases PWCs such as jet skis, waverunners, and Sea-Doos count as motorized watercraft. They must be registered and display registration numbers.

Where do I register my boat?

It depends on your state. The office that handles registration is usually the Department of Motor Vehicles or Department of Fish and Game. Check with your state or local government to find the right one.

What's the difference between titling and registering a boat?

It works like a car. The title declares who owns the vessel. Registration documents that ownership with the state.

Can I register my boat in more than one state?

No. A boat can be registered in only one state at a time. Most states let a vessel registered elsewhere operate for 60 consecutive days before it must be registered locally.

Registration Numbers, Decals, and the HIN FAQs

How do I display my registration number and decals? (Arizona example)

Rules differ by state. In Arizona, you display them like this:

  • Put the number on both sides of the bow, reading left to right. Paint it, apply it as a decal, or otherwise affix it.
  • Use block letters at least three inches high.
  • Choose a color that contrasts sharply with the background.
  • Separate the AZ prefix from the rest with a space or hyphen, as in AZ 6266 BS or AZ-6266-BS.
  • Don't display any other numbers on either side of the bow.
  • Place the validation decal on both sides, within three inches in front of the AZ.
  • Cover or remove expired decals so only the current ones show.

Check your own state's rules for size, spacing, and placement before you order. Boat Registration Regulations by state

What is a registration number?

It works like a license plate for your boat. The state assigns one to each registered boat, and it lets port and government authorities identify your vessel while it's in use. The number is displayed on the boat, typically on the bow. Your state sets the exact placement, size, and style.

What is a registration decal

Also called a validation decal, it works like the sticker on a car's plate. It shows your boat is registered for the current year, and you typically renew it yearly. Only the state issues registration decals. We make registration numbers, not validation decals.

What is a Hull Identification Number (HIN)?

The HIN is a serial number from the manufacturer that uniquely identifies your boat, much like a VIN on a car. It lets owners and buyers track the vessel's history. It is permanently attached to the starboard side of the transom

 Coast Guard Documentation FAQs

What does it mean to document a boat with the U.S. Coast Guard?

Documentation is a federal option separate from state registration. To qualify, the boat must weigh at least five net tons and be owned by a U.S. citizen. Vessels of that size used for commercial fishing or trading must be documented. Documentation gets your boat recognized internationally as a U.S. vessel and allows commerce between states and within certain restricted trade areas. The Coast Guard's National Vessel Documentation Center has the details.

If my boat is documented, do I still need state registration?

It depends on your state. Some states don't require documented vessels to register. Where they do, documented vessels are usually not required to display registration numbers. Confirm with your state boating agency

Do I need a boat name and hailing port?

Only if your boat is documented with the Coast Guard. Documented vessels must display the name and hailing port in block letters at least 4 inches tall, in a visible spot on the exterior. We make custom boat name and hailing port decals for this. Boat Name Font
