Boat Number and lettering Decals: 5 Questions to Ask Before You Buy

Replacing or upgrading your boat's registration numbers, name lettering decals, or graphics should be straightforward, but most buyers don't know what questions to ask before they order. The wrong decal can look off brand, peel prematurely, or simply not match the hull color your manufacturer used. Here's what to consider before you buy.

1. Do you need registration numbers, a boat name lettering, or both?

These are different products with different requirements. Registration numbers must meet your state's legal height and visibility rules. They should be a minimum of 3 inches high and use vertical block letters. Boat name decals are purely aesthetic and give you more flexibility in font, size, and placement. If your vessel is documented with the U.S. Coast Guard, there are specific rules that apply to how the name is displayed. United States Coast Guard (USCG) federally documented vessels must have a name that is 33 characters or fewer, uses Latin letters or Arabic/Roman numerals, and is displayed in durable letters at least 4 inches high on a visible part of the hull. Additionally, the official name on your USCG documentation must match what is displayed on the hull. If you're updating your hull name decal, it's a good time to verify both are in alignment before you order.

2. Does it match your boat brand's OEM color palette?

Generic decals are made to be universal, not accurate. If you own a MasterCraft, Malibu, Bennington, Cobalt, Ranger, or Sea Ray, for example. Your hull has a specific factory color that generic vinyl won't replicate cleanly. 3. Are the decals domed or flat?

Flat vinyl decals are common and inexpensive, but they're also more prone to edge lifting, UV fading, and wear from saltwater and sun. Domed decals, made with a marine-grade epoxy dome applied over the printed vinyl, resist the elements significantly better and maintain their color and finish longer.

4. Are they pre-spaced for easy installation?
